Question #108: Dear Dan: I am thinking of going to Univ. of Minnesota but they only have Division I hockey (no junior varsity or club team). I pretty much suck. I'm still in hockey and I may try out for junior teams, but what do I do if I don't make the team? M.M. (and Mighty Ducks fan all the way!)
Dan Replies: Dear MM: Even if you were being recruited to play hockey for a Division I school, my advice to you would be the same. Find the school that has a good course of study in what you want to do: business, architecture, music, engineering, etc. that also has a hockey program. Then go to that school. If your dream is to be a hockey player and an architect, don't go to a school to play hockey that doesn't have an architectural program.
In the case of U. of Minn. if you aren't recruited for the varsity hockey program, I believe they have intramural programs you can skate in, and there are Junior A and B teams in the area. But it's very important to live your life as if there were life after hockey. Because for all of us, eventually that's the way it is.
P.S. Thanks for being a Ducks fan.
