"When I was playing youth
hockey, I had questions about a lot of things. Should I play travel?
Should I play year 'round? Should I play up? I got a lot of advice from my three
older brothers who were good players and from my father. But
frankly, they didn't have a lot of experience in the sport either and
had a few questions of their own. So we had to make some of our decisions
without the benefit of any help.
"I've tried to remember a
lot of those questions and have added some of the questions that kids
or their parents have written to us and answered them in this
book. I answer most of the questions from my experience as
a player. My father
answers the questions from his perspective as the father of a hockey
family. Hopefully, we will provide answers to some of your question so
you don't have to be in the dark like we were.
"So whether you play
hockey just for fun, or if you aspire to play at higher levels, I
think you
will find this book helpful. It doesn't have any hints about
improving your slapshot or increasing your speed. But it will
improve your understanding of your participation in youth sports in
general and hockey in particular. I think it will inspire you
to be a better player and a better person. It won't help you
play the game better, it will help you live the game better." Dan Bylsma
