"Do you play pitcher's hands is out?" Scooter asked.
"Yep, pitcher's hands," was the
reply, "and automatic second, force at the plate, and
hitters-getters".
It was the baseball Scooter plays on the sand
lot near his home in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that rules his life,
not the Great Depression he hears his folks discuss. That is,
until his father loses his job and the family has to give up their
car. Then they can no longer make payments on their house.
His grandfather's visit and his insistence
that the family move to his home in another town comes as a blow to
Scooter. But there is no choice, and Scooter is miserable
until his grandfather leads him to the place where he can build a
new life with new friends and a Boy Scout baseball team in a real
league.
Like Scooter, you'll meet the town bully -
Doolie Higgins, the widow Bach, a boy named Casey, Satchel Paige
(the real Satchel Paige), a
refugee family from Hitler's Germany, and experience the strangest
play in baseball history.
"The Bylsma father-son writing team have
created a wonderful story - rich in historical detail, full of
excitement, warmth, and humor - a story that readers of all ages
will not want to put down." L.D.
