Skating Fundamentals

We've produced a pamphlet/memo   outlining how we use videos to critique skating fundamentals at the Dan Bylsma Hockey Camp. Many kids and parents think it’s one of the most helpful things we do for skaters. Seeing (yourself skate) is believing or a picture is worth a thousand words, etc. This pamphlet describes the process of generating the video, tells what to look for and how to display it, shows how to point out flaws in a player’s skating technique, and has suggestions as to how to correct these flaws.

This video technique can help coaches with teaching skating fundamentals whether or not they are skaters or skating instructors themselves.

It is available for $12.50 post paid. All the proceeds from the sale of this coaching aid go to Dan’s Charitable Trust Fund.  An example of part of one of the pages of the pamphlet is displayed.  Another is displayed when you roll your mouse over "Learning Aids" on the Home Page..  Order It

"Know Your Hockey" CD-ROM

Occasionally we come across a product that we think is worth noting and promoting. Such is the case with a CD-ROM called “KNOW YOUR HOCKEY”. It is a comprehensive instructional CD that was developed by Axia in conjunction with Craig Simpson, a former 50 goal scorer in the NHL; and Ron Mason, the coach with the most wins in USA College Hockey history.

Who should consider this CD? Coaches who haven’t played advanced hockey as a youth and players who could use a refresher on the fundamentals of the skills needed to play the game at higher levels and anyone who would like to learn more about how the game is played.

The CD is divided into four sections: Hockey Skills, Know the Game, the Equipment Room and Beyond the Game.

In the Hockey Skills section, 10 basic skill areas are examined from the best coaching and learning angles: Skating Forward, Skating Backward, Pivoting, Passing Forehand, Passing Backhand, Receiving a Pass, Shooting Forehand, Shooting Backhand, Puck Handling, and Goaltending. Goaltending itself is broken down into 25 specific skills. Each fundamental skill is broken down, step-by-step, to show how to do it right, then each skill is analyzed from different angles.

In the Skills Analyzer section, the user can compare different skills in the same screen or different views of the same skill, all designed to create a better understanding of how to perform each.

The user has the ability to control the action and learn at his/her own pace. Both the audio and video is totally user-controlled – making this an extremely powerful way to learn.

In the Know the Game section the player learns the key elements of each skill for offense and defense – the player roles and goals for the team in each zone – and how to use the skills in game situations. The player also learns the golden rules about offensive, neutral and defensive zones, plus the importance of other special areas of the ice such as the danger zone and along the boards. Basic skills plus 17 more advanced skills like face-offs and attacking the net are also presented for the learner. There’s even a section that rolls real NHL game footage to key decision points and then asks the learner to make a choice between skate-pass-or shoot for each play. This is a highly interactive and effective way to learn to make the right decision.

The Equipment Room will only be beneficial to the most novice skater but the Beyond the Game section emphasizes a lot of the same themes we talk about in our books and is beneficial for players as well as parents and coaches.

We found this to be easy to use, comprehensive, and very instructional. If you would like to sit at the feet of the winningest coach in college hockey, and analyze how professional players play the game, at $29.95 this is a good investment. It's $24.95 each when two or more are shipped to the same address.  The firm who produces this CD will donate $10.00 to Dan's Charitable Trust Fund for each CD sold.  Note:  The CD is shipped from Calgary, ALB.  Please allow two weeks for the Canadian and US Postal Services to make delivery.      Order It
